I love this song.  Like Ashoken Farewell it has become a backdrop for the Civil War.  Although it was written a decade before the war began, the song captures the essence of the poor rural South.

I have always heard it as a slow mournful cry of sorrow.  However, the melody is so strong it begs for more.
