Several years ago while vacationing, I happened upon a 'Civil War' cemetery. The docent explained many of the graves were empty.
The tombstones were put in place by the families of the men who never came home. Thousands were buried in mass graves. Often, out of the need to move in a hurry, Union and Confederate soldiers were buried together.
