I wrote this tune on the mandolin.  I was thinking there must have been social gatherings during the war.  I knew officers came home to a hero's welcome when on furlough.   In the movies they were given parties before having to go back to the front lines.  And if it's in the movies, it has to be true.


So, I began with a waltz rhythm. I saw all these people dancing and smiling and having fun.


My mind also saw the innocence of a young man, filling out his dance card, being just as scared to ask for a dance as facing a cannon.
